Inexpensive; Not very DurableJul 01, 2011
By Matthew Wild I play roller hockey and am a little closer to "retirement" than committed to playing the sport of hockey. I still try to play at least two nights a week however; sometimes three. I play mostly on a painted, wooden floor of an older, traditional skating rink and I don't think these pads held up very well. I bought the pads discounted to replace my previous pads, a pair of Tour GTL Lexur 400. Those were much better pads for me, though others I have talked to had a different experience. My GTLs saw more action for more years and held up much better than in the short time I have had these Evolutions. As I say, I would play an average of seven hours a week in these pads. My style is more or less butterfly with a few bad habits left unmanaged. Because of the floor and my habits, I don't slide laterally in butterfly form all that often. I stretch and stick out my legs and other movements to handle most lateral movements. My point is, I don't often glide along the floor like ice goalies so there should be less rubbing and tearing on the inner legs from the floor. After having the pads about 12 months, the inner knee pads/protectors came apart at the seams and I finally had to remove one. A few months later, the seams along the inner sides of the toes began to seperate and one leg seam split all the way up to just about my calf. The thigh protectors are soon to follow. I can say that the pads fit and protect well and their square, flat design are well suited for even stand up goalies. I remember people remarking that the pads look wide but this can be attributed to the square face and sides. They are very light and flex well. I bought the matching catch and blocker gloves which still stain my hands black from sweat and inferior materials. If you are just beginning to play roller hockey in the fantastic position of goaltender, these pads would be accepted as they are relatively inexpensive for your initial investments and will serve you well as you gain experience to learn more about what equipment you will need as you advance. But now I am in the same position as I was nearly two years ago. Wondering how much longer I will want to play and balancing that with a far too frugal spending mentality.
